XV INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL OF CERVEIRA

Regulation of the Art International Competition


 
I INTRODUCTION

The XV Biennial of Cerveira expands its exhibition area from the Cultural Forum to other external spaces, namely in other Portuguese districts and in Galicia (Spain). The biennial is structured by the space designed to present the work of the honoured artist, the sculptor Jorge Vieira. And also by the sites for the works of invited artists, for the works selected through the competition and as well as those meant to host the proposals of three curators – Fátima Lambert (Portugal), Paulo Reis (Brazil) and Orlando Brito-Ginório (Spain).


II COMPETITION

The competition is open to national and foreign citizens. Each participant may present 2 recent works that have not been awarded in other national or foreign competitions, in whatever size, in any form or style. Hence, each competitor should only send one photo (printed in paper) of each work to be considered by the pre-selection jury. In order to enhance for a better understanding of the works, each contestant ought to present a portfolio of his/her career, besides catalogues and an updated curriculum.

Three dimensional works have to indicate their size and weight. Every work must correspond to the technical sheet referred to in the Registration Form. 

sole §: The digital works should be hybrid, capable of running on both MAC and PC systems, edited on CD or DVD, and able to be read on QuickTime software in a DVD player.


III CURRICULUM

The curriculum must be written in single line spacing, Times New Roman 12 font, and saved on a floppy disk or CD (PC-Word), which will append the portfolio, so as to be able to be included in the catalogue.


IV PORTFOLIO

The portfolio should be handed out at the Biennial of Cerveira Office, from the 3rd February until the 30th March 2009, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Alternatively, the portfolio might be sent by post with two copies of the Registration Form, fully completed and duly signed, and stipulating that “I agree to all the conditions set forth in the regulation”.


V PRE-SELECTION AND FINAL SELECTION JURY

Until the 28th of April, the Jury will establish the pre-selection of the works for the competition, taking into account the author’s career and the relevance of the work(s) in the contemporary art context. This decision shall be conveyed to these participants so that they send their selected works.

The Pre-selection Jury is composed by:

VI PRE-SELECTED WORKS FOR THE COMPETITION

The pre-selected works must be delivered between the 3rd and the 7th May 2009 at the Cultural Forum of Cerveira. There they will be subjected to a final selection, prevailing over any prior appreciation, resulting eventually from the clear difference between the analysis of the photos and the works sent.
The authors of the unselected works will be informed in due time of this final and binding decision, of which there shall be no right to appeal or justify to.

The works sent by post will only be accepted if the date on the stamp is no longer than 7th May. Or, if they are unloaded at the works reception services by the closing date of 7th May, during working hours, at the following address:

VII CATALOGUE

In order to guarantee the quality of reproduction in the catalogue, the organization will photograph a work of each selected author, which will be part of the Museum’s archive. Each participant will be charged €25,00 Euros and is entitled to a copy of the catalogue.


VIII PRIZE-WINNING JURY

The prize-winning jury will meet right after the official opening of the XV Biennial of Cerveira. Only then will the jury acknowledge their binding decision, of which there shall be no right to appeal or justify to.

The jury is composed by:

IX ACQUISITIONS

a) Works, with no prize-winning character, will be purchased amounting at the total of approximately €50.000,00 Euros. This value may be altered since so far the number of sponsors is not yet complete.
These works will become part of the Biennial Museum collection assets, including those of the Cerveira’s City Hall Prize (Prémio Câmara Municipal de Cerveira) and the IPJ Young Prize for the digital arts (Prémio Jovem IPJ), as well as those announced in due time and named after each sponsor.

b) The Revelation Prize will be attributed to the nominee indicated by the jury, provided that the contender is not over 35 years old until the 31st December 2009.

c) The Jury may still further attribute unpecuniary prizes, if it is its will, denominated Honorary Mentions.

With regard to both the works purchased with no prize-winning character and all the other sold during the Biennial there will be a fee of 40% for the organization of the Biennial.


X APPEALS

There shall be no right to appeal or justify to the decisions of the pre-selection, selection and prize-winning juries, except for the appreciations written in the meetings’ proceedings.
 
 
XI INSURANCE

The organization is not liable for any damage or losses occurring to the works delivered for the competition. The competitors are responsible for ensuring their insurance, as they deem fit.
 
 
XII REMOVAL OF THE WORKS

Once the Biennial is over, all the competitors must remove their works at the place where they were delivered, within the time to be announced then.
The unselected works shall be removed after the appreciation of the Jury (like stated in IV), at the Cerveira Cultural Forum, immediately after the date to be indicated in due time. If they are to be sent back by post or other transportation logistics means, the authors will be responsible for these costs. If the time limit is not respected, the organization reserve the right to dispose of them as they deem fit.

No exhibited work may be removed before the closure of the Biennial.


XIII PROMOTION

The artists hereby consent to the use of their names and the reproduction of their works in the promotion and dissemination of both the Biennial and the Museum. They also authorize that their works are exhibit according to the criteria defined by the organization, which includes the fully acceptance of these regulations.


XIV OMISSIONS

Any omission from these regulations, or their interpretation, is the sole responsibility of the organization.
(These regulations are governed by the dictates of good faith, and shall be interpreted and executed accordingly.)
